　　地势地形：本县在大地构造单元上，属阴山天山纬向构造带，并受新华夏系构造的影响，形成内陆断陷盆地，整个辖区属河套平原，为第四纪松散的地层所覆盖，沉积了较厚的湖相地层。上部是冲积、风积层，主要岩性为细砂、粉砂和砂粘土互层。砂层层理清晰，厚度10－70米。

中部为河湖交替层，主要岩性为淤泥质、粉砂与粘土互层。下部为巨厚的新老第四纪湖相沉积层，主要岩性为淤泥质砂粘土。土质膏腴肥美，适于农作物及各种植被的生长。虽然有的土地呈盐碱化，但并不影响耐碱作物，如葵花、枸杞等作物的生长。
